Headline Poem 6/23/14 -- I said yes

Tsunami warning all along the U.S. Pacific Coast -- here is today's poem.

I said yes

Your love came to me like a tsunami.
Without a warning. I knew you'd been hit before but figured that was enough,
and I wasn't keeping score.
I didn't even know how to keep score. This game was so new, and I didn't realize there were so many rules.

I wasn't worried, and didn't think I should have been. I had no clue I was unprepared.
I fell deep, but not dangerously. I trusted you. I trusted myself.
If it had been hard in the beginning, I would not have stayed. I was used to running away,
but I was meant to stay and so were you.

Someone pulled us together and tied the knot. Triple tied like at recess so you don't have to stop
once you've gotten started.
Tied to last, like forest vines and faces unmasked.
Three C-Sections later, I'm still tied and so are you.

Balls and chains look good on me and you. I could have snapped those off a long time ago if my heart was not being guided and my head was not being ignored.

To leave or not to leave?
He loves me, he loves me not.
I hate him,
yet I stayed.

For years like a geometrical entity taking shape. It bends. It doesn't break. How the hell did it not break?!
How the hell
did we
not break?!

A woman shared our vows with an audience of abundant numbers almost thirteen years ago.
We laughed and danced and drank Bud Light and White Zinfandel -- kinda funny looking back.
I chatted it up with friends and family (many who have since said goodbye).

We promised
to love only
each other,

To be only with one another.

Then, we hopped in his Blazer and got Del Taco drive through in white dress and tux.
It's exhausting marrying the man of your dreams.

There is nothing I regret
(though I do wish our childhood pranks were not revealed! It must have been the Faith & Tim song and sweet, all you can drink, wine).

Today I'm much older and wiser, I believe. Before I fell, now I catch.
You and me made promises to keep.
I said yes.
I still do.

Headline Poem 4/29/14 -- Ball Meets Chain, Again

George Clooney is engaged. Many believed the day would never come. Mr. Clooney himself even made a $100,000 bet that he'd never marry again. Guess it's time for him to pay up!

Ball Meets Chain, Again

Among the passionless bodies
Some limp like fish,
you rise to the surface
Hello

Body not hollow from lack of sun
and nutrients and things
gone all wrong
This is actually fun
Hello

You learned the hard way pill form
is not the same
You can't suck the marrow out of life
If you haven't got your own
Hello

It will ruin your insides and your name
If ball meets chain,
again
you tried to cut the wire before
Forgetting the weight, ignoring the depths
Hello

Yet

Let no ill will be kept between friends
You are free to dream
without mistake
I will judge you hard, for a minute
I will laugh at your body,
and beg that you reap what you sow,
but my laughter will fade
Hello

Because I know that my heart
is no ordinary thing that beats and pumps and glistens
My heart hurts,
but it forgives
Even though you rubbed the embers to make hot wood,
I do not judge
Hello

I release you, and wish you good
today,
Tuesday,
I'm pleased love came your way
Hello

Headline Poem 1/5/14 -- Inheriting a Marriage

Today's poem is based on the news in Italy regarding Pope Francis and gay marriage. The Vatican is denying that Pope Francis directly supports gay marriage, and claims his recent statements reveal that he is sensitive to the fact that domestic situations are changing. Not all children go home to two married parents, and if they do, it's not necessarily a man and a woman.

Regardless of where the Pope, or anyone, stands on this topic, today's poem is for all of us. Whether you grew up in a home with a happy marriage, a broken marriage, or no marriage at all, you inherited one. We all did.

Inheriting a Marriage

The knobs of knees
Worn from prayer
Do not go gentle into that altered night
Like fins in an algae covered net, you will be trapped

Inheriting a marriage
Decades later
Different jewels
Remember not the jaded rules
Lacking smiles
Palms smooth from running the hands of the devil across the soul
Jagged edges no more

Inheriting a marriage
That's not my name
The mirror belongs to no one
The soap, the winter chill
Frozen water is not ice
It is melted love
Cold, but not hard
Do not freeze

Inheriting a marriage
Two together walking side by side
Compassionate strangers in life
Cradle full of the makings of one
Hide while you can
This one will run

Inheriting a marriage
Stand not in my shadows
Make your own
Four working hands
Skip, create, love
Messy smiles
Sloppy floors
Hilarious togetherness
A partnership of understanding
Not always in like, but always in love

Inheriting a marriage
Voices don't match, but the words are the same
Wood rotten from the inside
The house is standing
No one can figure out how

Inheriting a marriage
The fish swim upstream
They die together
Brown, black, yellow, orange, cream

Inheriting a marriage
Respect your partner
Nurture their soul and your own
Touch their skin
Listen to them dream
Laugh
Be kind
Remember that when they hurt, you hurt
The greatest gift you can give is your heart
That's the madness, that's the art
